How to Create a Spring Garden

Springtime = lovely flowers = learning about God = spring garden

This area in our backyard needs some serious TLC.  Our sprinklers haven't been doing the trick in this spot and I realized it too late, so the plants are mostly dead or dying.

Pretty sad, right?  Plus Charlee (our dog) has been intensely focused on digging up this area.  While I'm at it, I'll explain a few other things.

1) We decided against renovating our detached garage while doing the house renovation
2) We DID have every intention of painting the outside gray to match the house.
3) We didn't realize we forgot to have the painters paint it until 3 weeks post move in.
4) Hunter green was REALLY in during the 90's.
5) The whole garage needs LOTS-O-LOVE, but at the moment it's not getting any.
6) You are up to speed now:)

This area gets approximately 1 hour of sun per day.  Once the pecan tree sprouts all of its leaves it will probably get less than that.  So I spent some time researching which flowers would survive with little to no sun and INTENSE summer heat.   I try to not get too set on a plant/vine because inevitably I won't be able to find it.  #notthatintense #maybeoneday

1) Go to Lowe's and stock up on flowers/shrubs that work for your garden space.

2) Put brother down for a nap and GET TO WORK!

3) Pull up the dead shurbs/flowers.

4) Cut down the ivy from the trellis.

 5) Put down new soil and till it with the existing soil.  Sister helped to pat it down.

6) Lay out the plants so you will  know where to plant them.

7) Plant and water.

8) Add mulch to help keep the soil more moist and keep the weeds away.

9) I added a fence around the spring garden to keep the dog out.   I added a few stakes ($5) and some rabbit guard wire ($20) around the perimeter.  This portion was WAY easier than I thought it would be.  The stakes went right in and then I used zip ties to keep the guard wire in place.

Because I love before and afters... here they are.

It took us about 3 hours of work, lots-o-sweat and sweet memories.  Sister will help water and watch the plants, too.  Teaching responsibility and a love of nature.  Score!

Do you have a garden?  Have you spruced it up this spring?
